Red Cloud

Red Cloud

Hi All,

Thought you would want to know… the Anderson Sling saved its first life today and it was Red Cloud’s.

Red Cloud was lying down this morning when Martin got to work about 7:30. Many attempts to get Red Cloud to his feet throughout the day were unsuccessful. I wanted to try using the Anderson Sling and tractor to get him up, but just didn’t feel confident about doing it without a vet present just in the case something went terribly wrong, plus the sling is quite complicated.

In the early afternoon, Dr Ferguson arrived and together with Martin’s help, we hooked Red Cloud up to the sling and frame… quite a learning process. Martin picked him up with the tractor…  let him stand for a bit with the support of the tractor until Red Cloud took the weight out of the sling with his own legs. Not sure why he couldn’t get up this particular morning as he has been doing wonderfully since has been living in the arena and roams the property during the day… maybe the cold weather was a factor.

He was obviously very happy to be up and moving again… and very hungry. We closed the barn doors to keep the wind out and put a warm blanket on him for the night.

Latest rescue at Equamore:

Sweet, adorable, and on the road to recovery, this little guy arrived at Eden Farm on Friday, August 7th.

What was supposed to be a 40 year old mare turned out to be a much younger gelding. Although quite emaciated, after a few meals of food that he could swallow and not have to chew, Zeus perked up right away. So much so, that he took two steps and jumped a 4 foot railing out of the outdoor arena just because he could.

His teeth will be check out as soon as possible by a veterinarian and he has already been started on a slow deworming process, as most likely, he is full of parasites. Zues was alone in acres of irrigated pasture and still managed to look like this.

This is a response I received about our Anderson Sling training class. Buttercup’s story is amazing!

-Linda

“Thank you for sharing…as you can see from this video we had to improvise and it was less than perfect….I wish we had the opportunity to come and learn about the use of the sling…I will try to come up with someone! Thank you for all you do.”
Warmly,

The Anderson Sling provides skeletal support for horses unable to stand by themselves during rehabilitation from weakness, neurological impairment, and/or limb fractures. When Jenny and Paul Miller of Ashland discovered that no agency in the area had access to such a device, they made a generous donation to the Equamore Foundation to buy and make the sling available to Animal Control Offices, Fire Departments, Sheriff’s Departments, Veterinarian Offices, Large Animal Rescues, and the like.

Any agency which may need the Anderson Sling for rescue or rehabilitation is welcome to send representatives to a special training in its use to be conducted at Eden Farm on Friday, July 24th, beginning at 10:00 AM. The session, conducted by Jerry Floyd of Care of Disabled Animals, Inc., Potter Valley, CA, will take from 4 to 6 hours. Registration is $25 per person, which will include lunch.
For more information or to sign up, please call Linda at 541-482-5550 or email her at equamore@charter.net.
