Red Cloud
Hi All,
Thought you would want to know… the Anderson Sling saved its first life today and it was Red Cloud’s.
Red Cloud was lying down this morning when Martin got to work about 7:30. Many attempts to get Red Cloud to his feet throughout the day were unsuccessful. I wanted to try using the Anderson Sling and tractor to get him up, but just didn’t feel confident about doing it without a vet present just in the case something went terribly wrong, plus the sling is quite complicated.
In the early afternoon, Dr Ferguson arrived and together with Martin’s help, we hooked Red Cloud up to the sling and frame… quite a learning process. Martin picked him up with the tractor… let him stand for a bit with the support of the tractor until Red Cloud took the weight out of the sling with his own legs. Not sure why he couldn’t get up this particular morning as he has been doing wonderfully since has been living in the arena and roams the property during the day… maybe the cold weather was a factor.
He was obviously very happy to be up and moving again… and very hungry. We closed the barn doors to keep the wind out and put a warm blanket on him for the night.

Latest rescue at Equamore:
Sweet, adorable, and on the road to recovery, this little guy arrived at Eden Farm on Friday, August 7th.
What was supposed to be a 40 year old mare turned out to be a much younger gelding. Although quite emaciated, after a few meals of food that he could swallow and not have to chew, Zeus perked up right away. So much so, that he took two steps and jumped a 4 foot railing out of the outdoor arena just because he could. His teeth will be check out as soon as possible by a veterinarian and he has already been started on a slow deworming process, as most likely, he is full of parasites. Zues was alone in acres of irrigated pasture and still managed to look like this.

This is a response I received about our Anderson Sling training class. Buttercup’s story is amazing!

“Thank you for sharing…as you can see from this video we had to improvise and it was less than perfect….I wish we had the opportunity to come and learn about the use of the sling…I will try to come up with someone! Thank you for all you do.”
Warmly,
Joan Steelhammer

The Anderson Sling provides skeletal support for horses unable to stand by themselves during rehabilitation from weakness, neurological impairment, and/or limb fractures. When Jenny and Paul Miller of Ashland discovered that no agency in the area had access to such a device, they made a generous donation to the Equamore Foundation to buy and make the sling available to Animal Control Offices, Fire Departments, Sheriff’s Departments, Veterinarian Offices, Large Animal Rescues, and the like.
Any agency which may need the Anderson Sling for rescue or rehabilitation is welcome to send representatives to a special training in its use to be conducted at Eden Farm on Friday, July 24th, beginning at 10:00 AM. The session, conducted by Jerry Floyd of Care of Disabled Animals, Inc., Potter Valley, CA, will take from 4 to 6 hours. Registration is $25 per person, which will include lunch.
For more information or to sign up, please call Linda at 541-482-5550 or email her at equamore@charter.net.

April 1, 2009
Dear Equamore Members,
2008 brought many accomplishments and some changes to the Equamore Foundation. Through news reports, the CD, the web site, and the 2009 Calendar, the Foundation established a solid reputation as a quality horse rescue. Although the Foundation continues to care for rescued horses at Eden Farm, the Board has changed its focus by adopting a new mission statement and by-laws to govern its activities. Additionally, the Board has elected me as its new President and contracted with Julie Fritz, the manager of Sanctuary One, to oversee grant writing activities.
The Foundation benefited during 2007 and 2008 from an active board, from a dedicated cadre of trained “Horse Guardians,” and from a generous public. The 2008 Equamore Festival was a modest success, and two fund raising campaigns organized by The Grotto Restaurant in Talent brought in over $3500. Those successes, however, were overshadowed by the alarming increase in neglected and/or abused animals, which resulted in a doubling of the horses in Equamore’s care. Although income in 2008 came closer to expenditures, we continue to increase the stabling debt owed to Eden Farm’s owner, Linda Davis, who works tirelessly—and without compensation—as Equamore’s Executive Director. Retiring that debt and continuing to care for the Equamore horses must become Equamore’s two most important goals for 2009-10
To that end the Board has decided to take on no new rescues as permanent residents. Instead, we will concentrate our efforts to care for our present equine wards and to increase our income through grants and fund-raising activities. I hope I can count on you to help me and the Board make the Equamore Foundation a self-sustaining enterprise dedicated to our mission:
Equamore’s mission: to provide a safety net for unwanted, abused, abandoned, neglected, and aged horses who are without alternatives for their care, while fostering compassion and responsibility for horses through education, outreach, intervention, and placement of horses in need to caring guardians.
Thank you,
Nancy Mitchell Ash, President
Equamore Foundation Board of Directors
Hello Everyone,
The next board meeting, the first with Nancy Ash as board president, will begin at 5 pm on February 1st at Eden Farm. As with all board meetings, Equamore members at large and the public are welcome. Items to be discussed include Equamore’s fund-raising efforts and its relationship with other animal welfare organizations, including the Oregon Horse Welfare Council.
Please RSVP if you are planning on coming.
Thank you.

Linda reports, “The ‘Sweetest Stallion’ Bader is now a gelding as of Thursday the 13th. Fin is changing daily, letting Anna brush him and he actually licked my hand yesterday. Got a lead rope around his neck for a moment yesterday will have him halter trained in no time now. They are both looking healthy and energetic!”
Linda Davis reports, “We can now touch Fin. He is finally allowing Anna and me to pet him!”
Anna Clay is on the Equamore Board and does a lion’s share of work for the horses of Equamore! These pictures show her love for the horses. It was just a few short months ago when Fin arrived at Equamore on August 17th. Notice the difference in Fin’s overall condition! Amazing what the proper care and feeding, and love will do for a horse.
